We utiise the Dewey system whereby it is possible that any number of books can have the same call number, if they are on related subjects. However, as you have rightly spotted, the two titles mentioned are in fact slightly separated by subject number in the Dewey system.

This is because individual libraries are able to vary call numbers to group items together for ease of access by students, and to minimise students having difficulty locating them.

In this case, several years ago, it was decided by the Newcastle cataloguer, together with the library manager, to give both titles the MYOB number, to ensure all MYOB items shelved near each other.

We note that a number of other libraries have followed suit on this , again highlighting the MYOB number to direct students to one spot only. Not all students regularly use the catalogue,  as many rely on browsing, so libraries  can walk a fine line in maintaining a Dewey number  based collection, but in still ensuring major texts are easily located by our users.

We are always happy to receive feedback on our numbering system, and in fact, assess items not well used to check the call number we give them is in fact the best number for patron access.
